Design

The landscapes we build come in many different forms, from traditionally authentic gardens to serene meditation spaces or more modern and sculptural rock gardens.

Our landscapes are tied closely to living and working spaces, and the success of each project is measured by the satisfaction and daily enjoyment that they provide the client.

Applying the aesthetics and principles of Japanese gardening tradition, we strive to create landscapes that are infused with the elegance of nature.

Our design process generally has three components: initial consultation and site visit, drawing concept sketches and design plans, followed by planning out the project and searching for materials.

Consultation

The first step in our process is setting up a site visit. During this initial consultation we assess the landscape space and look at how the home and garden can be integrated for maximum effect. Most importantly, we listen to what you have in mind.

Every project is unique, with variations of the home architecture, interaction with the surrounding landscape, functional needs and budget. Therefore, each design is a custom solution.

The initial consultation is when we get an idea of the basic aspects of the project, for example the inspiration of the homeowner, what they hope to achieve, the functional needs of the space, followed by an honest discussion of possibilities.

Drawing

Following the initial consultation, we give an estimate of the design fee, then begin the process of conceptualization.

Before starting finished drawings, steps in this phase include viewing inspiration photos together, doing concept sketches and agreeing on the direction of the design.

By this point there is enough focused information to begin finished drawings. Once those are done, we meet again to discuss the proposed design, followed by any adjustments before moving to the planning phase.

Planning

Proper planning before beginning the build phase is crucial to the flow and execution of the installation. We work out the steps ahead of time, from site prep to hardscaping to planting and finishing touches.

Our pre-build planning also includes searching for the high-quality stones and plants, as well as coordinating the timing of deliveries of any special products like fencing materials and unique specimen trees.

Japanese Garden Construction

In the hands of a talented garden builder, one-of-a-kind boulders, sculpted specimen trees and shrubs, lush ground cover and water-worn stepping stones are arranged in an irregular yet balanced way, to produce what can only be called living art.
